Biography

Karen P. Freed, LCSW-C, BCD is a clinical social worker with more than 35 years of experience working with children and families.  She has spent many of these years concentrating on helping families deal with separation and divorce and the changes brought about by the accompanying restructuring of families.  She is sensitive to the emotional turmoil, uncertainty about the future and anxiety that these changes bring not only for adults but also for children.  As a therapist and as a Parenting Coordinator she has seen the trauma that people experience as a result of an adversarial divorce process.  As a Divorce Coach in the Collaborative Process she has seen how families benefit from a non-adversarial, hopeful process that focuses on the future and provides a structure for addressing financial, property and parenting issues with integrity and respect.

As an experienced Divorce Coach, Karen provides a caring and supportive environment in which clients can identify their needs and those of their children.  She also helps clients identify their goals and the questions to be answered that will help them achieve their goals.  She works with parents to craft a parenting plan in which the children’s needs are front and center and which defines the expectations and responsibilities of co-parents.  The parenting plan lays a foundation for successful co-parenting and serves as a roadmap for the future.  In addition, Karen works with parents to strengthen communication and problem-solving skills and helps them manage the emotions that accompany separation and divorce.

Karen also helps parents develop a narrative to use in explaining to their children what is happening and works with parents to anticipate questions children might ask and ways of responding.

Karen is committed to helping clients resolve issues in a manner that is constructive, creative, and forward looking.

Karen is an affiliate of the Collaborative Practice Center of Greater Washington and an affiliate of the Collaborative Practice Center of Montgomery County.  She is an active member of the Collaborative Community and was a founder of the Collaborative Divorce Association of Montgomery County (CDA) where she served 2 terms as co-president.  She was also a founder of the Montgomery County Divorce Roundtable, a multidisciplinary group of professionals established to find ways that professionals and the court system can work together to mitigate the negative impact of divorce on families.

Karen is a member of the Collaborative Dispute Resolution (CDRP) practice group as well as a member of the District of Columbia Academy of Collaborative Professionals (DCACP) where she is serving her 3rd term as board member.  She is also a founding member and current board member of the Collaborative Project of Maryland (CPM) which provides collaborative law services to people of modest means.

Karen is a frequent presenter at conferences for professionals dealing with separation and divorce including presentations at George Washington University School of Law, Maryland Judicial Institute training for new judges, and is a continuing presenter at New Beginnings where she talks about children and the law.  She has also appeared on television and radio to talk about divorce and its impact on families.

Karen was chosen by her peers as one of the best mental health professionals in the DC Metro area in the category of separation and divorce, Washingtonian Magazine, July 2009 “Best of Washington” issue.
