Richard Dodd is a collaborative family lawyer representing clients in Montgomery County, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. His practice encompasses divorce, child custody and support, alimony and marital assets allocation. Mindful to minimize the cost and acrimony of conventional divorce and custody litigation, in his role as a collaborative attorney he encourages and facilitates clients’ direct negotiation of mutually beneficial settlement agreements through mediation or collaborative meetings.
Mr. Dodd brings issue framing, negotiation and mediation skills to collaborative law, earned over 25 years as litigation counsel to individuals and small companies, and as in-house counsel to several major companies. Since completing foundational training in collaborative law and mediation he has pursued advanced training in family law topics including: child custody mediation and negotiation of co-parenting plans, overcoming barriers to negotiating alimony and child support, international child custody, and drafting premarital and divorce settlement agreements. He also brings his personal mindfulness practice to anchor his presence with empathy in client interactions, and coaches clients to self-monitor reactivity in contentious circumstances.
Mr. Dodd’s commitment to collaborative law includes collaborative representation of pro bono clients referred by the Collaborative Project of Maryland. Mr. Dodd is also a member of the Family Law Sections of the D.C. Bar, the Maryland State Bar Association and the Bar Association of Montgomery County.  He has also collaborated in drafting and testifying in support of legislation to reform Maryland law to protect against dissipation of marital assets and abduction of children.
